Monday was the fourth installment of the SBCN Young Networkers chapter. The great people at Vyana Wellness Naturopathic Centre graciously donated their office space for us to hold our meeting.
We are also very thankful to Carol Glover of FireHorse Consulting Inc. who was our speaker for the evening. Carol, a seasoned veteran of the corporate world, and now a small business owner, talked about champions and challengers in her career and transition to an entrepreneur. Challengers, as she put it, are people who stand in your way and use negativity as an attempt to sway you off your future path. Her challenger came in the form of a former co-worker who bluntly told her she is not going to make it in the industry. Carol absorbed that negativity and turned it into fuel to succeed in her career. Champions, on the other hand are positive people in our lives that support the decisions we make. Champions for me include family, friends and other members of the SBCN who listen to what I have to say and provide positive feedback and constructive criticism. Sometimes the challengers may have more of an effect on us then the champions. It's comforting to have people in your life support you but when someone tells you, you can't do something, or in Carol's case that you won't ever become of anything, that can more of a call to action than anything else.
A call to action was also a theme in Carol's talk for us. Carol asked attendees what goals we have right now and what we are going to do see them completed. This can be an easy task or in can be daunting. Carol looked at calls to action from the prospective of an introverted turtle. It’s tough to stick your head out and leave the protection of the shell. The shell or your comfort zone is where we feel safe, not judged and remain content in its shelter. Looking back in history, what has ever become of not sticking our heads out and leaving the shell, the nest, whatever analogy you like? Who knows but chances are you get what you have always got. Her final call to action for us is to switch things up, take a risk, and stick your head out a little a see what new rewards there are out there to reap.
Thank again to Carol for enlightening us on this topic with great conviction and creating a dialogue that followed.
