I am finding that the SMB's who take advantage of the networking opportunities out there, and who follow up consistently with the connections they meet at events are the ones who are building strong businesses and are successful. Utilizing the online resources, such as LinkedIn, Facebook & Twitter is definitely a bonus, but unfortunately many of the SMB's are struggling to maintain a routine and not feel overwhelmed by the work involved.
Ideally building a structure that works for the individual is the way to go but not everyone can choose this option as they are uncertain of the choices. This is why networking organizations such as the Small Business Community Network offer the support these SMB's need. A tried and tested method means not having to reinvent the wheel, which in turn saves time and money.
In an ideal world our clients/customers would come to us through ongoing referrals but this does not happen in the first year or so of building a business. Sitting and waiting by the phone or in your office for this to happen is a complete waste if time. You are far better off if you go out there, connect, build relationships and practise consistency where and when you network and with your follow up.
Social events are as valuable as the more focused business networking events, but are not the place to sell, and this then leads to a misconception that they are a waste of time. But, the social events are a chance to get to know others in a different environment, which is relaxing and opens up many different opportunities to get to know your connections in a less formal setting. Those looking for instant gratification are probably not going to last the course when building a small business, even though they may have a small success rate in the first year they tend to flail and get left behind.
Fear can hold us back from exploring the possibilities out there, whether you are looking for networking events, mentors, financial help or plain and and simple connections with whom to build relationships. Believing in yourself and knowing you need help, whether it is pertains to branding, sales, marketing, or networking is the first step.
Recognizing the many opportunities out theres and taking advantage of them is the way to go!
