Serve Your Future Self

It’s the best definition of self-discipline I’ve ever heard.

Your future self has no choice but to deal with the decisions you make in the present moment.

We all have things we’re glad our past selves did—or didn’t do. We also all have the opposite.

What are you doing today to make life easier and better for your future self? At the end of the year—or even the month—will you look back and thank your past self for the decisions they made and the actions they took? Or will you be dealing with the consequences of their poor choices?

Will your future self be healthier based on what you are doing today?
Will they be wiser?
Will they be more abundant?

Or will they be the opposite of those things?

When facing more cold calls, remind yourself of what a great 2025 year-end your future self will have because you did them.

When you don’t feel like hitting the gym, envision how fit and trim your future self will be at the end of the year because you went anyway.

When you’re working too much, think of the stronger relationships and fun memories you’ll have at the end of the year because you put your laptop away and spent quality time with loved ones.

If you’re a leader, you’re probably good at serving others. You likely serve your family, your customers, your employees, your company, and your community.

I urge you to put your future self at the top of this list—not at the bottom.

If you’re a leader, you probably appreciate all the things other people do.

I urge you to consistently look back and thank your past self for all the good things they’ve done for you, too.

It can be life-changing.

Every day, I enjoy thanking my past self for the things they’ve done that now make my life better and easier. And every day, I look for little ways I can serve my future self better.

The small things make a huge difference to my future self’s quality of life. Making the bed in the morning so it’s comfy when my future self is tired, or setting up the coffee machine the night before so my future self has an easier morning, are always appreciated.

Eating better, exercising, and doing extra business development are all simple things I can do that will drastically improve life for my future self over time. And today, I can look back and feel gratitude for my past self—even if they weren’t perfect at it.

What can you do today to make life easier and better for your future self tomorrow, next month, and at the end of the year?
