Commercial food establishments today create a huge amount of waste. Food Waste comprises of about 40% of all waste generated and is the #1 contaminant of all waste products. Cardboard, Plastic, Metal and Glass are all rather easy to recycle into useful products not so with food waste. Until now establishments put all food waste into containers which they have removed on a regular basis at a large cost, or some such as fast food establishments send food waste in regular garbage pickup that ends up at the dump. The food waste they are storing and having shipped out for processing is made up of approximately 70% liquid which in itself is quite heavy.
WasteStation is a new and exciting product manufactured by Imperial Machine Company of the U.K. and distributed in Canada by PCM Global Support Services. WasteStation reduces the volume of food waste that needs to be removed by 80% of its volume and 60% of its mass by dewatering the waste. With less volume and less mass pickups are less frequent and saves establishments up to 80% of food waste disposal costs.
How does WasteStation work?
WasteStation macerates the food waste into small particles which are then sent into a centrifuge to remove the grey water which is send to drain. The dry food waste is then deposited into a small lidded bin for removal and storage. The grey water can also be sent to a recirculation tank for future use in the WasteStation.
Why is WasteStation preferred by many establishments?
It’s small footprint takes up little space in a kitchen.
It’s the only unit on the market today that is self cleaning. After each use WasteStation runs a quick cleaning program to get the unit ready for the next use. At the end of the day the establishment can quickly rinse the outside of the unit then push a button to do a complete clean.
It can process 100KG (220LBS) of food waste in less than 10 minutes using very little electricity.
Reduces the amount of storage space and handling required.
The food waste is at the preferred moisture level for composting. By use of an in vessel composter some large establishments can reduce their food waste removal fees to $0 and help our environment.
Quick food stats by http://davidsuzuki.org/what-you-can-do/food-and-our-planet/help-end-food-waste/
Close to half of all food produced worldwide is wasted.
Discarded in processing, transport, supermarkets and kitchens
In Toronto, single family households discard about 275 kilos of food waste Per year (although the city’s expanding composting program captures about 75% of that). That means one in four food purchases still ends up in landfill .Toronto tax payers spend nearly $10 million a year getting rid of food waste that’s not composted.
Over 30% of fruits and vegetables in North America don’t even make it onto store shelves because they’re not aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
About 20% of Canada’s methane emissions (a greenhouse gas that traps more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide) come from landfills.
When food goes to landfill all the resources to grow, ship, and produce is also wasted. In the US alone, the amount of water loss from food waste is like leaving a tap running and pouring 40 trillion litres of water down the drain
