Canadian Association for Music Therapy tunes into health!
National Music Therapy Month, March 2010
Waterloo, ON (Mar 16) - In a treatment room at a rehabilitation centre, a musical miracle is unfolding. “John”, who is unable to speak as a result of a stroke, has discovered he is still able to sing. Singing familiar songs with the music therapist allows John to express his feelings of frustration and isolation. To honour the successes of clients whose lives have been touched by music therapy, music therapists across Canada celebrate National Music Therapy Month. “This month is dedicated to increasing awareness of music therapy across the country and music therapists who work everyday to make positive changes in so many people’s lives,” says Louise Cadrin, Past President of the Canadian Association for Music Therapy. “Music therapy is an effective treatment option that is on the rise in Canada. National Music Therapy Month allows us to demonstrate the deep therapeutic potential of music therapy.”
About Music Therapists
Music therapists are accredited health care professionals, who utilise their applied knowledge and understanding of the art and science of music therapy to improve clients’ physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.
Music therapists work with the very young to the elderly and are active in all areas of the community including long-term care centers, schools, hospices, group homes, rehabilitation centers and private clinics. Through their work with individuals and small groups, music therapists aim to improve the quality of life and well-being of each client.
A variety of techniques are used for this treatment including: singing, playing instruments, movement, listening, songwriting, imagery and improvisation, providing the basis for a trusting relationship as well as the medium through which individualized treatment goals can be achieved.
