First of all, a big thank you to everyone that has donated to the Movember cause already! Whether your donation was given to myself, a friend, family member or co-worker, it’s all going to the same great cause: Prostate Cancer Canada, for awareness and research.
The Waterloo team alone has raised over $8,000 ($8,220 as I write this)! We’re easily in reach of surpassing the $10,000 mark.
I know every one of us is proud to be a part of this cause. Sporting some ridiculous facial hair is a small price to pay to bring attention to something so important. In its early stages, prostate cancer is treatable: the problem of course is convincing men to get checked so that it can be caught in those early stages.
For me, the best part about Movember is that it gets people talking about something they normally wouldn’t. On November 1st, had you heard that prostate cancer affects 1 in 6 men? Or that over 4400 men will die of it this year? Maybe. Maybe not. I’m guessing that by now most of you have heard those statistics thanks to the huge participation from this community.
So, before the month is out, I have one last request: If you haven’t donated already, please do so. Many of you have friends, brothers, fathers, uncles or colleagues taking part in Movember – so reach out to them to find out how you can donate to them.
If you don’t personally know anyone besides me who’s involved, you can of course donate through me or the Waterloo Movember team: http://myitguy.ca/u/mo
Prostate Cancer Canada (www.prostatecancer.ca) uses the Movember funds for the development of programs related to awareness, public education, advocacy, support of those affected and research into the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of prostate cancer.
