How To Cut Through The Card Clutter

Are you confused about which business card would work for you? I felt quite overwhelmed with all the different choices when I was trying to decide which card would work best for my small business.

I took charge of the situation by sifting through all the information I was receiving from different organizations. They were each advertising their card as the “best-choice” for me, but as I quickly came to realize, many were generic and only fit certain aspects of my business. I needed something that was a bit more tailored to my needs and worked for a variety of aspects.

Before beginning my research I narrowed down what I needed in my card to two topics, Rewards and Flexibility. Through this I came across some interesting information and wanted to share with you:

Rewards

It’s no surprise that small business owners work more than the average person, so it’s nice when there’s an opportunity to get rewarded. A recent American Express Canada survey found that 54% of SBOs say the opportunity to earn points on their business expenses is the most important factor when choosing a business card. Through my research I found the newly refreshed Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express. This card has a variety of features that really give Cardmembers the types of rewards they’re looking for.

Membership Rewards allows me to redeem rewards and use them for myself, my business or my employees. I can use the rewards to offset travel costs if I need to take a flight for a new business opportunity, I can use them for gift cards to provide incentive or recognition to employees or I can even use them towards business expenses. The options are endless!

Flexibility

I see the Business Gold Rewards Card as a tool to further my business due to its ability to make me and my business flexible. Knowing I have up to 55 interest free days means I am not panicking about paying my bill, especially if one of my clients is late paying me. These additional benefits allow me to be extremely flexible in when and how I get paid allowing me to do business with different clients regularly.

One of the main reasons why I look for flexibility in a card is because I know there will be unprecedented incidents that can happen at any time. When one of our computer servers finally gave up and died, a card with no pre-set limits allowed me to use my card to purchase a new server, which meant my business would not suffer and I could make a smooth transition.

By using PointFlex, I’m able to redeem my points for statement credits, which offsets eligible purchases charged to my card, exactly what I’m looking for in my primary business card. Additionally, the TripFlex feature, allows me to redeem my points for any travel purchase (including hotels and car rental) which have been charged to my card within the last 12 months.  The card also has a 1:1 transfer to Aeroplan and Avios, and Membership Rewards.

With a card like the Business Gold Rewards Card I get the flexibility I want and need. The card offers cash flow flexibility, with no pre-set spending limit. This allows me to make unpredicted purchases for my small business, such as a new computer, which had not been in my budget at the beginning of the year.

I cut through the card clutter and saw light at the end of the tunnel. I feel it is very important to find a business card that does more to help small business owners. That’s why I am sharing how excited I am about the newly refreshed Amex Business Gold Rewards Card.
